Victoria Silverwood
Dr Victoria Silverwood is a Criminologist, Researcher, Writer and Advocate for player welfare in sports. She works at Swansea University, UK where she has established the first UK course in Sports Criminology, and is the co-founder and Director of The Swansea Centre of Research in Sport & Society (SCORSS)
With a background in criminal defence law, Victoria returned to academia to complete two masters degrees in Criminology (2009); and Social Research Methods (2010). Her PhD (completed 2015) is entitled "Five for Fighting: The Culture and Practice of Violence in Professional Ice Hockey". This work was featured in the award-winning feature documentary film 'Ice Guardians' (2016)
With 16 years experience researching violence in sport, and the culture of violence in professional hockey in particular, Victoria regularly appears in news media discussing sports culture, law and the impact of sport on professional athletes. She is an advocate who whole-life player welfare and is particularly interested in the long term impacts of violence in sport on players. She is a member of 'Progressive Rugby' a non-profit group advocating for player safety and awareness of the long term effects of concussion and brain injury on players.
